Content Filters Blocking MagicSchool

What to do when your school's content filter or security software is preventing access to MagicSchool.

School networks often use content filtering systems, firewalls, or security software to protect students and staff online. In some cases, these systems may block access to MagicSchool or prevent certain features from working correctly. This article helps IT administrators and teachers identify and resolve those issues.

⚠️ Common Symptoms of a Blocked Connection

If MagicSchool is being blocked or filtered on your network, you may experience:

  • A blank or error page when attempting to load app.magicschool.ai

  • The login page loading but failing to authenticate

  • Tools that load but do not generate output

  • Images or file uploads that fail to process

  • MagicStudent rooms that students cannot access

  • A security warning or "site blocked" message from your browser or network

📝 Note: If the issue only occurs on your school network and not on a personal device or mobile hotspot, a content filter or firewall is very likely the cause.

🛠️ Step-by-Step Resolution

Step 1: Check the MagicSchool Status Page

Before assuming a content filter is the issue, confirm that MagicSchool itself is not experiencing an outage. Visit status.magicschool.ai to check the current status of all platform services. If there is an active incident, the issue may resolve on its own once the incident is cleared.

Step 2: Whitelist the Required URLs

The most common fix for content filter issues is ensuring the required MagicSchool URLs are whitelisted on your school's network. Provide the following to your IT administrator:

For teachers and staff

● app.magicschool.ai

● login.magicschool.ai

For teachers and staff using SSO (Clever, ClassLink, or other)

● app.magicschool.ai

● login.magicschool.ai

● ed.link

For students

● student.magicschool.ai

For students using SSO

● app.magicschool.ai

● student.magicschool.ai

● login.magicschool.ai

● ed.link

⚠️ Important: Whitelisting must be done by your school or district IT administrator. Teachers and students cannot make these changes themselves.

Step 3: Check for Known Blocking Issues

Certain security and content filtering platforms have been known to block MagicSchool features by default. If your school uses any of the following, see the notes below:

  • Securly: Securly Aware may block MagicStudent if student activity monitoring is enabled and MagicSchool's student domain has not been added to the allowlist. Ensure student.magicschool.ai is explicitly allowed in your Securly configuration.

  • Palo Alto Cortex XDR / Prisma: Palo Alto's endpoint security software has been known to block MagicSchool's AI image generation feature. If teachers can access MagicSchool generally but the image generator fails, check whether Palo Alto is intercepting requests to Adobe's image generation endpoints.

  • Google Admin Console: If your district uses Google Workspace for Education, you may need to explicitly grant MagicSchool access through the Google Admin Console. See the Help Center article "Step-by-Step Guide for granting access to MagicSchool in the Google Admin Console" for full instructions.

  • Firewall or Proxy Servers: If your district routes web traffic through a proxy server or firewall with SSL inspection enabled, the inspection process may interfere with MagicSchool's secure connections. Work with your IT team to add MagicSchool's domains to the SSL inspection bypass list.

Step 4: Test on a Different Network

Ask the affected user to try accessing MagicSchool on a different network, such as a personal mobile hotspot, to confirm the issue is network-specific. If MagicSchool works on the alternate network but not the school network, the school's content filter or firewall is almost certainly the cause.

Step 5: Contact MagicSchool Support

If you have whitelisted the required URLs and are still experiencing issues, contact MagicSchool support at [email protected]. Please include:

  • A description of what is being blocked and which features are affected

  • The content filtering or security software your district uses

  • Any error messages or blocked-site notices the user sees

  • Whether the issue affects all users or specific users or devices

  • Whether the issue occurs on all browsers or a specific one

🏫 For IT Administrators: Quick Reference

Here is a summary of what to check when MagicSchool is blocked on your network:

  1. Confirm MagicSchool status at status.magicschool.ai — rule out a platform outage first.

  2. Whitelist all required MagicSchool URLs for teachers and students (see Step 2 above).

  3. If using Google Workspace, grant MagicSchool access in the Google Admin Console.

  4. If using Securly, add student.magicschool.ai to the student allowlist.

  5. If using Palo Alto Cortex XDR, check whether image generation endpoints are being blocked.

  6. If SSL inspection is enabled, add MagicSchool domains to the inspection bypass list.

  7. Test on an alternate network to confirm the issue is network-specific.

  8. Contact [email protected] if the issue persists after completing the steps above.
