Each tool in a Student Room requires you to select a grade level when adding or customizing it. MagicSchool uses that grade level to calibrate how the AI responds — adjusting vocabulary, sentence complexity, and tone to be age-appropriate for your students.
⚙️ How Grade Level Is Set
Grade level is set when you add tools to a Student Room. Here's how:
Open MagicStudent and select Rooms
Click "MagicStudent" in the left navigation panel and select "Rooms" from the dropdown.
Create a new room or open an existing one
Select a grade level for your first tool
When you add the first tool to a room, you will be prompted to select a grade level. This setting tells the AI how to calibrate its responses for students using that tool.
Customize your tools and save them to the room
Once grade level is set for your first tool, subsequent tools you add will automatically populate with that same grade level. Custom student tools will default to the grade level selected when they were created, but the grade level can be changed at any time.
📝 Note: The grade level auto-populates for additional tools based on your first selection. For custom student tools, the grade level will default to whatever was selected when the tool was originally created — but it can be changed at any time.
✅ Best practice: Select the grade level that reflects your students' reading and comprehension level, not necessarily their enrolled grade. For example, if your 6th graders are reading at a 4th grade level, selecting Grade 4 will produce more accessible responses.
